- The annual income earned from the investment of resources in a commercial or economic activity, usually expressed as a percentage of the original investment. In a discounted cash flow appraisal, for example, the rate of return may be expressed as an internal rate of return, whereas investment in a division or subsidiary may be expressed as an accounting rate of return or return on capital employed.
